I like playing chess when I'm wasted, but lose most of my games when I do. But this one time when I was REALY wasted, I beat a guy in a chess cafe that was waaaaaaaaaaaaay out of my league. I mean: I'm a beginner and only know some basic stuff and this guy was a 1800 or so. Didn't mate him but won on time: still felt pretty good. Got me drinking a lot more though....
is it really playing drunk a good option?
Playing drunk is a GREAT option if winning isn't your primary objective, and you don't mind the havoc it will wreak on your brain and body, and in extreme cases your relationships, life and driving record.
I don't think I've played sober yet - probaly explains my rating :-)
Oh dear.....hahahahaha thanks for the laugh!
I have done it and won on the FICS. Being slightly buzzed so you have to calm down and use your thinking time wisely can be a good thing, but being drunk just makes it twice as funny when you win. My opponents seemed insulted when I told them about it though. Drinking does not effect chess skill as quickly as you would think.
It's good if you don't mind losing about 200 points to your rating in about an hour.
Why wasting pot on that if I can easily achieve the same being stone-cold sober?

I sit corrected. I was actually talking about the drunk chess scenario. High chess should probably improve focus unless it's that 'one hitter quitter' strength where you end up in the fetal position humming some song on repeat for comfort because you're too stoned to open your mouth and sing the words.
You make a good point. I also like that suggestion of the relaxing with a glass of red.

Okay, I thought you were replying to what MidnightExpress was saying.
Listening to music, having a long night full of chess ahead of you, your blanket wrapped around you and your cat on your lap... weed or alcohol just make something more enjoyable than it already is!
Oh man, I should write commercial scripts or something ...
Well. There was a chess master called Gideon Stahlberg. He had a habit of playing while drunk. Once he turned up to play Nadjorf in a proper tournament. Stahlberg was drunker than a skunk. I mean, legless. But Stahlberg proceeded to wipe Nadjorf off the board. It was said that Stahlberg was the greatest combination player ever. That is, at combining chess and alcohol.
But I wouldn't recommend this as a chess strategy.
It's perfectly fine...as long as your oponent is also drunk.
Right, playing drunk may not be a good option, but playing drunks is.
One time, when I was really high, I convinced myself that my opponents bishop, which was pointed at my queen, was actually a double agent who really worked for me. Because of this, he would never take my queen. Not only did this little fantasy cost me about 10 min's off my clock, but I left my queen en prise and the SOB took it!

If only you really could influence the opponent's pieces to where they are convinced they work for you. You'd suddenly start seeing all these new victories by help mates.
No, I lost many rating points and posted many idocies, like now
Should I play with my reaction times slowed, my judgement impaired and my coordination impeded? Guess it can't hurt. What could possibly go wrong?
I'm in two minds about this - on the one hand I've managed to pull off some pretty cool and out-there combinations while otp, but I've lost an equal (or greater) number of games due to the same influence. Basically, the biggest problem with playing drunk (for me) is not evaluating immediate threats, but seeing ahead. Alcohol just about kills foresight.
Also lol at the title "is it really playing drunk a good idea?" I'd say the word order there answers your question.

Yup, I noticed that too. You're not as think as we drunk you are!
pcui (playing chess under the influence) is a misdemeanor in most states. It is punishable with fines and penalties of different kinds and enforceable by any memeber of a domestic household; restriction of beer drinking privileges up to being shut in the bathroom closet for a week. Careful, players.
