Is it rude not to resign?

Hey guys what do you think about people not resigning in hopeless situations?

Is it rude for me to ask them to resign? I understand if there's like 1 minute on the clock but have had several people now try to stall out and stale mate when I have 3 minutes or more left. I didn't say anything in chat this game but I have to confess I was a little bad mannered with my final moves as you can see.

Yes it is rude to ask opponent to resign, especially if he continues to make moves. I actually hate opponents who resign, because i love to give checkmate. If opponent stops making moves and lets you wait for several minutes untill time runs out, just report him. I am in team of GM Ben Finegold who sometimes says that resingning should be banned.

not resigning is not rude. asking someone to resign is.

Rude indeed!

Not resigning is not inherently rude—it’s a personal choice.

If you are under 1500 elo I would say not resigning isn't rude because games can go any way (above 1500 there are definitely some situations where one side is completely winning and it is courtesy for the losing side to resign). Nothing is rude about asking your opponent kindly to resign, either.

Sobrukai

It is unkind to demand resignation

Their choice it's ruder to ask them to resign though it can be a bit tedious it depends on the situation :/ but it honestly doesn't matter if go with no it isn't rude to play it out besides playing out positions can help you learn something and can sometimes give wins

If it's one time sure though most people try to presure you to give up which is rude

Resignation in chess is an acknowledgement that you're in a hopelessly lost position and you expect your opponent is skilled enough to finish the game within the alotted time. If these conditions are met, resignation saves both parties a bit of time.

Personally, I believe players below 1000 ELO should never resign if only just to practice defending lost positions. Below this ELO, the game is really never over and many players don't know how to reliably cpnvert any winning advantage.

Above 1000, you should start respecting your opponents skills and resign if you have no hope or tricks left.

Thanks for the great responses everyone I found them very useful.

Not resigning when you’re losing and continuing to play isn’t rude, it’s actually almost always a good idea if you’re at a lower rating, but just stalling out the game and not playing definitely is. I would say asking someone else to resign is a little rude, but it’s not that bad
RubberSoul54
Let me clarify, it is rude for you to ask them. It’s not rude to not resign. A draw or even a game changing move are always possible.

It isn't rude if you are in a winning position are you ask nicely once

No one is ever obligated to resign, but that was an example of when white should have resigned
Mysticalanimals

Not resigning lets checkmate happen, so I believe it is the opposite of rude.

"hey man please resign bro just resign" have you tried playing better moves that win faster instead?

Yes it would be rude to ask them to resign. Also, you should be careful when having fun like that at the end, you don't want to have too much fun and trigger the 50 move rule.

GM-Hongwaree

It is, since resigning is always the opponents right and optionial thing to do. Same goes the other way around.
