That is the absolute worst time to send it.

Better to send a GG just before you get mated.

Imagine you send GG over a move which looks like checkmate...

and then you fail to realise that the queen (which is supposed to land the "checkmate") gets captured by a bishop from the other end.

Agree on this reason, you say GG and it's not. Best to wait until game ends 👌

PizzaMitKnoblauch

Slightly rude.

Offensive gg's are always rude. I'm not saying don't do them, as entertainment is surely to follow.

Danne91

Yup rude, it will be seen as sarcastic, you wouldn't say gg over the board before you checkmate someone.

However you always shake the persons hand before and after so a draw.png emoji at the start of the game and after the mate is something I sometimes do.

AtaChess68
Yes, I consider it slightly rude or childish.

Yes, I consider it rude for someone to say "gg" before checkmating someone. It shows arrogance and is quite rude. Just wait until mate is delivered to say "good game". Be sincere and kind towards others!

gg mate
Anomyous_person

I think not it will be rude to say it because The opponent can do nothing about getting checkmated. And if it is a 4 moves win . It's not the big damage, like if you have played in like 2 hours and you have pushed yourself. It would not be good if the opponent have mated you. So yes i think its rude

There are some threads here that claim that not saying "gg" at the end of the game is rude. Even that is a logic that is hard to follow for me (if a player decides to not chat, why is it a problem?). However, this topic flips the whole issue on its head. Now it is also rude to say "gg". WTF.

Solmyr1234

I only say gg if opponent wins or draw. Saying gg when You win may imply that your 'good game' message is sarcastic. [You know that it's not sarcastic, but your opponent doesn't know it - for him / her, you're a complete stranger, and may be a sarcastic person - and since there's some bad people out there, it's logical to think that 'anonymous' [=you] may be one of them], therefore - offending may ensue.

dfgh123

If someone misinterprets your gg don't worry about it.

It is rude to say it before the game is over because it is like they are insisting that you resign, or else they are mocking you. I've had people say that to me after I hang a piece and it is very annoying, I may decide to resign but I also mark them for poor sportsmanship. It does not sound sincere if the game is still going.

Also as another poster mentioned it could turn out that you have missed something and it is not mate after all, then you would look very silly saying "gg".

technical_knockout

'gg' immediately after the game is best.

Marcyful

Depends on the situation. If its a friend you've known for quite a while or someone you know who doesn't mind trash talk, go for it. Against an online stranger you've just played though, I would not recommend saying gg ever when you won the game. Even if you had good intentions, oftentimes those two small letters would be interpreted as sarcasm or an insult to the opponent's skill if you say it before you deliver the final blow.

@goldenbeer when I told cute_catgirl it would be better to send a GG when she is about to get mated, it was so she could imagine herself in that situation and how she would feel if she received a GG message (and maybe then she might have a little compassion for the opponent she wanted to message.)

I know she would never send a GG in that situation.

unless your opponent is stalling by taking forever it is rude

Before  check-mating your opponent.... say "I am sorry".

It would be polite.
