Is it too late to take up chess at the age of 14?

Hello everyone and thank you for reaching my topic. I started playing chess on May 2020. At this time ( 29 of April 2021). I've been playing for about 11 months and my online rapid rating is 1600+. I turned 15 in February and i wanted to ask everyone if it is too late , especially in this whole Covid situation, to become at least a CM before i turn 18?? And generally is my age holding me back from gaining a chess title? Thank you!

It's never too late! I started playing more seriously in 2017 (age 14) with probably 1200-1300 strength. Now I am 1900-2000 online (sadly 1650 OTB, rarely playing IRL) and won some good OTB tournaments. With work and patience you get there for sure!! I wish you good luck! happy.png

No your not too old to improve in Chess!  But don't expect it will come easy.  A title go for it!  But with everything in life there are trade offs.  Choose wisely.

its actually the perfect age to start considering human brain performance reaches its peak from 12 to 24, then it slowly declines. So you are just in time imo. Ah also another advice: don't rely on pple opinions, create your own plan. Dont follow the crowd. If pple tell u to play chess then dont play it. And think out of the box: if pple say you are good at chess then probably you aren't

It is a little late. However a CM in 5 years is quite possible.
1600 OTB is not that difficult.
The 1800 is first hurdle because everybody has stopped hanging material.
The 2000 is getting technical, bad pawns, end games.
The 2200 (CM) is the hardest as you face experienced players, the point at which you really have to be able see what is going on.

The problem is finding enough graded tournaments and the time to play them as in your teens there is all that exam stuff and social life away from chess.

I started to learn chess age 20. If you love what you are doing just strive to improve and enjoy the game. Getting a title is a bonus.

And always remember, a GrandioseStrategy is better than a GrandloseStrategy.

What do you mean?

Just play chess if you feel like it. Getting a title is an objective I never put to myself and, to be sincere, I can't see any advantage one can get from it.
