Is my jump in rating unprecedented?

This is a funny post. I think going from 2500 to 2793 is more difficult than earning a billion dollars unless you are a very young 2500 player. Going from 782 to 1075 should be done in a matter of one month or perhaps a few months provided that serious long games are played.

If someone dabbles mostly in bullet and blitz games, then going from 782 to 1075 is very impressive. In other words people who play very fast controls should not go up. Well, maybe they should go up a little bit, but not much.

If you've gone up only on bullets and blitzes, it is indeed very impressive! happy.png

StupidGM,

Yeah, they vary a lot. Yet they don't vary 300 points a day unless you have just started to play here. Once you played a lot of games here, your rating varies only a little, maybe by 8-10 points per game. The same story is with OTB ratings (Actually, you won't be rated until you played a certain number of games in OTB tournaments)

Yes, your rating can be deflated and inflated by around 200 points. However, it's more typical for amateurs. People with an ELO of 2500+ don't experience such huge jumps even in bullet games. So, 2500 GMs don't reach 2793, not by a long shot.

Yeah and with 8-10 points per game that means after 20 games your rating could have gone up or down by 160-200 points. That just 2 hours of 3|0 blitz.

i also jumped from under 700 to 1000 in this period

Is your screen name an intentional misspelling?

magnus carlsen and alexandra kosteniuk both told me that their scared of playing against the up and coming vladimir. .... vishy anand dosent stand a chance . karpov also says you play your pawns at a higher level than hell ever know.. your jump in rating is astonishing, you should be a chesswriter, so we can learn your tricks.

Update:

My rating has skyrocketed to 1153.

gingerninja2003

i went from 800- 1411 in 4-5 months.

it really depends on the person on how fast you improve. some people can barely improve 100 in year. for others it's easy.

Recently, I  have experienced an incredible jump in my blitz rating.

I was rated 782 on December 5th, and today I am rated 1075. That is a rating increase of 293 points.

I was so impressed with this achievement that I began to analyze how impressive it is. I was of the opinion that my increase from 782 to 1075 (293 points), is equally as impressive as a GM going from 2500 to 2793 (Also 293 points). But then I got thinking, my rating jump is arguably more impressive since I am a beginner. It is easier for a GM to improve because he is already an expert.

How impressive is my rating jump in reality, and how does it compare to a GM jumping in rating by the same amount?

Thank you for your input in advance.

You're the next world champion that's for sure.

MGleason

You'd been over 1000 before.

I did it in five minutes once.  Old Nissan Micra.  Small engine.

Please do not discredit Vlad. He is the future of chess.

MGleason

That's what he's planning to do to Carlsen.

ed1975

I jumped 402 points from winning a single game once.

Whoa Johnjohn!!  Sounds like a good question for a shrink. Keep flying high

Anyway, I'm finding it difficult to best players rated above or close to 1200. Is 1200 and above considered to be the elite level of chess?

MGleason

No, not really.  If you're at 1200 you're going to trounce the typical guy who likes chess and plays a game every now and then, but for those who play it regularly, it's towards the lower end of things.

Pulpofeira

Yes, definitely 1200-2880 is considered to be the elite level of chess.

Is it normal that I'm a fast learner and yet I increase at the pace of a snail?

Because I may have too much math in my head.
