Is Online Chess a video game?

I would say yes, when played in a digital format, same as online card games, pinball, etc.
Just like any video game, chess on chess.com has a point system (a rating system here). It also has league divisions, which is similar to ranks in other video games. And as you get better, you go up into better leagues and get a higher rating. Sounds familiar, right?
So, I would consider chess online as its very own video game.
No chess is not a video game. It’s a board game that can also be represented and played digitally. So is chess ITSELF A video game? No. I honestly think there’s something way off about calling the digital representation of chess a video game. Which one of these is not like the others?

Well, it is obvious which are video games and which is digital dance simulation.
What is your definition of a video game? Any game played on a computer? Yes, chess would count. A fast paced game where mechanical skills (Fast reflexes, steady aim, etc etc) play a large part? No, other than maybe blitz or bullet.
That's an intriguing question! Online chess does fall into the realm of digital gaming, but it's often considered more of an online board game than a traditional video game. However, the lines can sometimes blur depending on how you define video games.

Online chess is, as others have pointed out, strictly speaking, a video game. However, there is a connotation associated with video games that implies a different type of games design than simply porting a boardgame to a computer. This usually means an original design that exploits all the advantages of a PC-type platform. To some extent its semantics, if it's played on a computer its a video game.
