Is over the board chess better then online chess?
They’re very different things. In OTB, your whole being is focused into that game, for hours. It’s exhausting. Fun. Tragic. Exhilarating. Addicting. It’s hard to explain to non-chess people, or those who haven’t played in classics OTB tournaments. Online is fun too, but somehow much less significant. At least that’s been my experience.
There is no comparison. Having your opponent in front of you is a very different thing from sitting alone in a room looking at a screen. Not to mention the OTB tournament experience. I only tried it once : it was an internal tournament for beginner members of the club, fantastic even if quite insignificant. Games that lasted for hours ( 2h x 40 moves + 1h to the end ), tense atmospheres, people watching... Not even remotely recreatable online.
However, thanks to online chess sites, many can learn and practice this game that otherwise they would not even have the opportunity to know. I myself have not played chess for many, many years because I couldn't attend a club anymore ( an irreplaceable experience that lasted one year), and after a long time, about two years ago, I resumed where I left off, online.
Therefore, thanks to online chess and the possibility it offers !
Over the board chess is the only genuine way to say you are 100% confident you have earned your rating, I have an ECF rating playing in chess over board tournaments it's the only way to really play, problem you have with online chess and all online sites can never offer anyone during play that you can feel confident that the person your playing is Genuine, only facing your opponents achieves this, I take online chess with a pinch of salt, you cannot be sure your playing a real person, could be some Bot, least over tge board you can say for certain who you are playing against!!? :thinker ;)
Online you can never guarantee tge person your playing is legitimate over the board you face your opponent so you know its genuine. Online chess is not serious, how can it be??
