Is Playing Bots Worthwhile or a waste of time?

It shouldn't do any harm. It's just extra practice, and because there isn't any time concerns, it is a great place for experimentation before you play someone real

agree

I like playing the really strong bots with the evaluation bar on.

I think someone else also mentioned this. If you keep playing lower rated players, you're not going to learn as you will repeatedly beat them. If you keep playing higher rated players, you won't learn as you'll keep getting beaten. Overall the computer is better to learn with than a random human.

But as you beat lower ranked players, your opponents keep getting stronger . . . until you start losing.  Isn't the system trying to guide you to a level where you are about 50-50?

I’m pretty mediocre but have been studying and beating the bots to 1400 and now looking at the advanced bots.

I want to start playing people again but make a decent showing at my level - before I could see that people were able to capitalize on my opening mistakes!

I now have a few all purpose openings where as before I was just playing my best at Ruy Lopez and 4 nights.

I see where they make mistakes to level off.

How high should I probably go with the bots (advanced level) to make a respectable showing in “da streets” of chess?!

I never had a rating.  Is there a corresponding bot to beat to better understand your rating level?

Playing a new opening you've just learnt against a strong bot with evaluation on is a good way to see ideas you're opponent might play early on. You'll need to play different 'style' bots again and again though to start to see potential plans your opponents could reasonably use in a real game against you though.

If there is an opening you really want to play, like the highly recommended Orangutan Opening, a bot will play it with you.

Grandmaster Larry Kaufman went almost 10 years only playing computers back in the 80s/90s and won the State Championship when he returned to otb chess.
