Just this morning, the commentator for the Tata Steel tournament quoted Jordan van Foreest, who said how difficult it is to make a living as a professional chessplayer. He is rated about 2700 and is in the top 100 in the world.

The top 20 or 30 receive invitations to tournaments that guarantee prize money for every player. However, the next 50 to 100 play in open tournaments for prizes that barely cover travel and housing.

A few countries provide support for top players. And a few players have sponsors who invest in their development. The top players in the world can get product endorsements.

So, apart from the top 50 or 100 players who receive such support, a chess master may be better off teaching, writing, or blogging than playing for tournament prizes.

if you are bright, training in a profession—engineering, accounting, computer science, medicine, etc.—is a more certain road to financial success than chess.
