Yeh! thats a good question?

Is the brain physical?

Avatar of wbilfc

I'd define physical as muscular, movement, strength, speed...brain is mental, perception, intellect, knowledge....any offers anyone?

Avatar of Stevie65

The brain controls muscle and vice versa, should it not be physical?

Avatar of TheGrobe

Not so sure about the vice versa part....

When you put your hand in the fire, the brain tells you to pull it out.

Avatar of wbilfc

Yeah...but that's not muscle controlling the brain...

Avatar of Stevie65

Hmmm....

It seems to me as though you're abstracting out the brain.. It certainly serves the purposes you mention, but ultimately it's a series of nerve fibers that form electro-chemical connections.   Similar nerve fibers run through our muscles and enable them to contract.  So tied are our nerve fibers to our muscular performance, that many fitness supplements are geared towards making the nerves fire more fully.

I posit that the organization of neurons within the brain is no less physical than the structure and organization of muscle tissue.   Certainly not in the cerebellum where our intelligence of movement resides.. But I might suggest that it's all interrelated and physical in nature..

What about the Foramen Magnum!!  No one has mentioned the Foramen Magnum.

Yep and ultimately we're all made of star dust, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to recognise the difference between two people. I think you can probably break most things down to a degree that muddies the waters, but on a day to day basis most people will naturally recognise the difference between physical and mental. How did we get on to this...
