yeah, of course anyone can blunder... with so many hard game, but when i saying he messed up... if he had taken 2min to make sure, he would have draw yes?

Nope. Tata Steel proves it. And what is he doing playing these openings/defenses 'they' play...he's naturally going to get outplayed because they understand them so well. I don't understand it.

Yeah, it's almost as if these openings are chosen for some other reason. Maybe they're actually good or something? I guess no one knows.

And you say "proves it" except he's not at the bottom of the pack.

I still say it 'proves it'  4.5/11....will not finish in the top half...maybe his next outing against these guys will be different.

An amateur will often avoid a simple mistake by taking 2 extra minutes because an amateur is lazy and has poor habits.

A professional may not avoid a simple mistake by taking 2 extra minutes because they work as hard as possible and their simple mistakes come from fatigue, not laziness.

I guess it depends on what we mean by "elite"

I'd say he deserves his 2700 status. He's clearly not a top 10 player though.

What you waffling on about? Amateur are lazy and poor habits? So that include amateur Chess player who is doctor or lawyer and play 1hr per day? Stop making excuses yes? these high players get rest day, luxury accommodation, get up and walk about between move... is not hard labour my friend... he make amateur mistake by presuming game was over... not checking the line to make sure? i said he was good player, but if he this lazy and petulant, maybe he doesn't belong at high level...

LionVanHalen

Game last near 5 hour yes? so he threw away that effort by petulant, not what a professional does... sick of your silliness yes?

Welp, Shanky showed up today to kick azz and chew gum..... and he was all out of gum.

Sam was torqued after yesterday and shanked Nepo who is having a good tournament.  Way to bounce back Sam!

Although I don't know why Nepo didn't play 18. Qxa2.  Looks fine to this patzer.

SeniorPatzer

Perhaps Anish is a clever fisherman and he baited Sam?

"I realized it was a draw so it was very difficult for me to behave," said Giri. "On the one hand I wanted to think about the position, trying to figure out if there is still a chance without going 45.b6; on the other hand I realized there's probably none. And I thought after 45.b6 he thinks he's lost, so I decided to give it a shot and with a stone cold face I went 45.b6, and then he extends his hand. OK, I shake it and to be sure I ask: 'Did you resign?' and he says 'yes'...OK."

Agreed.

Hey, I have one of his video's....his new book...always pulling for him....but 'elite' players do not resign drawn positions.

Again thought you are right, it all comes down to semantics. wink.png

LionVanHalen

Don't write him off though... a young Carlsen did something very similar and lose to the same player, Giri? Was long tough game, and he didn't check proper, lesson to be learned...

Kasparov resigned a technically not-lost position against Deep Blue. So it happens even to the best.

One of the things we have to constantly remind ourselves of is the fact that the most recent tournament (or the most recent game) is NOT the whole truth about any given player. I hope Sam is able to stick around in the 'elite' circle; it'll take a few tournaments before any kind of reliable data can be gleaned, and - all speculating aside - numerics alone indicate that he's capable.

Shankland is also exciting to me because he's a product of US chess. Caruana, Nakamura, and So all cut their teeth playing in Europe where chess is bigger, better, and stronger. Sam Shankland came up grinding in open tournaments in the US and training with American coaches. Wesley So is a great American chess player.....but Shankland is the hometown hero.

LionVanHalen

and like said, Carlsen made a similar blunder against Giri... didn't do him much harm?

Cornfed

Carlsen is 'already elite'...indeed, that by which all things are measured in chess. Few can get to that 'elite' level...it would be nice if Sam can one day.

Choowd3

I think hes a great and powerful player but with the likes of ivanchuck and gelfand, no

LionVanHalen

Anybody who achieve title of GM has a right to be elite... i think a better term for Sam would be Super GM, which he might get...

He's got a better endgame position right now in the last round vs Kramnik. If he wins he'll finish at 50% in his first elite tournament.

Edit: NOPE, just went back to equal.

All Kramnik need do now is sac the bishop to force the draw.

Edit: But he doesn't do it! I guess he wants to try to win, but it's a dangerous endgame.

SeniorPatzer

Yes!  GM Shankland won!!  Very, very happy for him.  He scored 50% in this Elite Tournament showing that he totally belongs in this class.

Congratulations Sam!!

Kramnik missed a mate in one. It happens.

Yes, Shanky is elite.
Cornfed

'Elite' is more than momentary success. Get back to me in 2-3 yrs and.
