I've been playing a tournament in Melbourne my rating is 1060... I know I know it's awful, I have been out of the "club chess scene" for over ten years and decided it's good for me to play, helps teach me to become calm in stressful situations, and to be fair to me my "street chess" rating (if one existed would be around 15-1600) so anyhow... The first round I played a 1599 and I lost, I played a non existent system of the Karo Cann, so after round one I'm on 0 and I'm the 22nd seed out of 27, the next round I play another loser whose rating is 1465, which I won, I played e4 he played e5 nf3 nf6 though that week, well 5 days before that game I bought some double weighted pieces and board and started studying, I really wanted to avoid playing the Russian. So now I'm 1 and 1, so I get paired with a winner whose rating is 1437 and I drew, then as I'm looking at the draw for next week I'm happened to play black against an 1853, so I'm seed 22 the others below me and the few who are just above me are playing averages agisnst of 1400...So I lose that one, and then round five I'm paired with a 1565, so the people ranked b low me are getting much easier games rated against my average rating against is 1585, 525points higher. I mean that's all good good for me so anyway. After all that I'm 2 from five 2 loses 2 draws and a win, round six hasn't been posted yet, I must assume I play someone on 2? And is it because I'm a low rating I always get the highest rating against? Seeing there is no way for me to win the tournament should I be paired with even rating players? At the end of the day I should be allowed to compete for the rating prize? It seems that the lower players have easier pairings and now sit higher than me but have played averages way less than I.... Anyway anyone got any similar stories or answers please respond

Hello! How are you? I hope everything is okay there.

Hey, don't feel sad about rating. Sometimes it happens to me the same feeling and how bad I am on chess! With time I discovered the magic of playing tournaments with people of my same level (online or not) and I have a lot of fun, especially with blitz and bullet. happy.png

It may happen that if you lose and 1800 loses too, there are probabilities you play against him/her. But, the higher you are on the ranking, the harder it is and the harder are your opponents.

Again, don't be sad, enjoy it, the world is yours!

Other people can be constructive and relevant. I'm just here to say that your post is rambling and a pain to read.

Why did you read it then? A bit a stream of consciousness never hurt any body....

I don't know what tournament you are in, sounds like it is just one small local one with only one open division.  Usually in the USCF tournaments there are different sections so players of similar ratings (within 300 points or so) play each other, there are like Open, Expert, A, B, C, and D classes all with their own prizes....

Harkness rating categories
Category Rating range
Grandmaster 2600 and up
Senior master 2400–2599
Master 2200–2399
Expert 2000–2199
Class A 1800–1999
Class B 1600–1799
Class C under 1600

However, each tournament can be different depending on how many people are expected to show and how many actually show, there is some leeway......

Yeah it's an open tournament, but by the way if you're over 2500 and you have won your 3 games against GMS you'd become a GM no?
