Is there a dress code for OTB?

I see all the GMs and other titled players in suits and ties, so it made me curious if there's an unspoken dress code for OTB tournaments

Organizers can set an acceptable dress code, but most regular events don't have anything required.

If you wear a sport coat in the US, you will stand out.

Imagine dressing up in a dinosaur costume into the hall.

I'm pretty certain it's kind of implied though. I could not recall if sandals were prohibited or not during one of my local tournaments.

Iirc, there is a rule against distracting items that may, well, distract your opponent. So definitely don’t show up in a dinosaur costume, but I think anything is fine.

I have seen plenty of young ladies playing tournaments while dressed like they are going to a nightclub. I think they do it more as a comfort thing, but I hope they realize it can be distracting to male opponents.

A local guy usually wears flip-flops with his slacks and sport coat.

I remember a guy who used to travel around Midwest chess tournaments in the late 80s/early 90s who was called "the naked guy." He was at least in his 60s, always barefoot and usually wore a raggedy old cutoff tee-shirt with the sides slit mostly open and some short shorts. He used to show people newspaper clippings of his various arrests (and victories over local authorities) regarding driving while naked. No one really wanted to talk to him but he'd inflict himself on some unsuspecting bystander who dawdled a little too long at the crosstables or the water pitchers.

Something about American chess (or heck just 'Merica period) attracts lots of weirdos lol. I say that as one such weirdo in FL chess XD.  I would occasionally have opponents that would refuse to play me (i guess its the crazy look and the sigil of baphomet i used to wear  around my neck) that did the trick. There must be like 2-3 tourney directors i owe favors to for reasoning with these people lol. I could almost understand if they were kids, but no, sometimes, its grown men !

I think that says a lot more about you than the ladies. You have never seen boobies before or what?

That’s also kinda sexist lmao.

Poker players making millions in pajamas and you want "professional" look in tournaments??

Avatar of RomanNumeral_ii

well, poker is a different topic, but likely I'd prefer better dress codes there too just for professionalism
