Is there such thing as "luck" in chess?

It's hard to say. It could be because gaming usually refers to gambling, and luck often times plays a part in gambling. It also refers to video games, so not sure what the relevance is there. I don't see gaming associated with chess, but who knows, people like to make things up all the time.

Those are both relevant.  Also,  chess is another game.  Is this a serious question?  lol

Is what a serious question?

I don't know why you keep saying gaming either. It's normally a term for gambling, but it also refers to video games. Now maybe you believe chess is a gambling game, where chance and luck are significant factors, I don't know. Take the Nevada Gaming Control board for example. Not really any mention of chess, but LOTS of references to gambling. Where luck and chance play a big part.

DiamondHawk09

Yes - it is considered "good luck" if you happen to play against somebody of Rapid Rating 1

lfPatriotGames

I thought the sport of kings was most things horse related. But there is a lot of luck in gambling at the horse races.

I believe chess is a game,  hence "gaming".   wow,  I can't believe you  are asking why i would use the word.  We are gamers,  and yes when we are playing chess online, chess is another e-sport.     Also yes gambling relates to the topic because it shows the differences between games of chance which are based solely on luck,  or games that have elements of luck within them, versus games based solely on skill.

The reason you can't believe it is because I didn't ask. It's just that gaming usually refers to gambling. People do gamble at chess, but typically gaming refers to games of chance. Or luck.

Its also even more commonly used for video games,  which is the modern definition.  The players we call gamers.   Gaming also can mean scamming someone.    I'm a gambler and never used to the term except for referring to a "gaming commission"  which who would make the rules for a certain game or sport.

No, the gaming commission does not make the rules for certain games or sports. Sometimes you say things that are completely out of whack. Sometimes it's amusing, sometimes it's sad.

For example college basketball is a big deal for gamblers. But the gaming commission does not participate in the rules for basketball.

They do for horse racing, which many consider a sport, as do I.  There are certain "rules" they regulate.    What is sad is the lengths you are going to argue over the fact I include chess in gaming,  which is another video game,  and another sport.    Probably two things you do not believe.        Which are the same reasons why you convince yourself there is luck in chess.

Also whether you believe gaming is only for gambling games is it related.   Because the differences between games that have elements of random chance and those that don't,  are the topic of this thread

Gaming commissions make the rules for horse racing?? Do you even at least think about what you are saying before you type it? I would think horse racing organizations might make the rules for horse racing, not a gambling commission. Seems like that might be a bit of a conflict of interest.

And this time it's a question.

There is also an online gaming commission in case you didn't know.   And they have rules in place,  call them regulations or principles if you want,  to enforce fair play.  Much like this site will have terms of service.  Rules that we must abide by.      Keep playing "gotcha",  it only makes you look desperate to find something to prove me wrong on.

I still will not forget how you tried to prove there is no difference between chance and luck.   by dishonestly posting only a 3rd of the cambridge definition,  foolishly thinking I would not expose that.

Also notice I said rules "FOR" games and sports.   not rules "IN" games and sports.   This is also a very important distinction people fail to realize when debating luck "IN" chess,  and luck "OUTSIDE" of chess, when the former is the topic of this thread.    It seems you still have that mental block and failure to comprehend such in your mind....

I don't have to play "gotcha". You are extremely determined to do it to yourself. From gambling commissions making the rules for sports, to thinking I asked a question when I didn't, then not answering when I did, to believing there is no luck in chess. I know every day is a bad day for you when it comes to having this conversation, but today clearly is a worse than usual day.

It's almost like those high school ball games where the score is 78-2.  When you are having a day like this I don't think it's right to make it worse. So, have a nice day.

Fat idiot doesn't realize that he's got a similar post count despite being here a few months and she over a decade.

If someone considers Mario kart a sport, the only sensible response is to give them a wedgie or Chinese burn - not argue with them for weeks/months/years.

Stop giving spam attention.

any video game without elements of luck or pay to win aspects as part of the gameplay or design is a sport imo.  As is Chess.   You have also made racist remarks in other threads,  and imo you are the type of person people should stay away from.   When I see mass shootings I think of haters like you.   But fitting for someone who resents the site so much they don't even play any games on it,  just personal attacks against other posters that do. Trolling on a fake account for over 2 years now.  disturbing.    Your screen name in itself is a cry for help.  I hope you get it.

Is this some kind of Land of Eagle and Donuts thing? Most people who stil use "game = hazard game or lottery" are referring to the laws and government which are rarely up-to-date with current lingo. Otherwise, gaming and gamers are people playing games, often video games, and not gamblers.

Because chess is a game of skill, unlike, say, darts, auto racing, and skeet.
