Is this a draw?

Is there a guaranteed way for white to get a queen? It is white's move.

HorsesGalore

answer is no.   wherever White's K moves, Black maintains the opposition.   Then sooner or later the pawn must advance.

Rule of thumb is when the pawn advances to the 7th rank and it is NOT a check, then White wins.    White can not force that from this initial position.

If I can make an assumption about the orientation of the board then this is drawn if it is White's move and lost if it is Black's. The themes are opposition and zugzwang. This is the most basic of endgames, you really should know it.

"Is this a draw?"
Yes
"Is there a guaranteed way for white to get a queen with white to move?"
No

With the pawn there, to win the white king needs to land on b6, c6, or d6. But black has the opposition so the black king can continue to block the white king.

After Kd5 Kd7 c5 Kc7 the black king no longer has the opposition, but white can't take the opposition because the pawn is in the way (white can't play Kc5).

If it's black to move then white wins. If black moves Kb7 white plays Kd6 (lands on a critical square) or if black moves Kd7 then white plays Kb6.

I am rather curious. Both of you answered "no". Can I ask you both two questions?

Firstly, why do you percieve the OP to be more important than the title?

Secondly, despite your answer to the above, surely you see that answering yes or no here is unbelieveably ambiguous considering the opposite nature of the questions of the title and OP, so why do it?

Edit: 0110 edited his post...

No this is not a draw. White can promote the pawn, but he must be careful to avoid stalemate. With correct play, he can not be stopped. Check out the tactics trainer. It can show you how to do it correctly.

Move the pieces up one rank, and it doesn't matter whose move it is (white will win).

Here with white to move it's a draw though.

How is it possible to come here, read three much higher rated players than yourself saying one thing and still believe the opposite to be true so much so that you post it confidently without even seriously acknowledging the previous posts?

Seriously, how is that possible?

You are of course completely wrong but that isn't the puzzling factor here.

Yes you are correct. I am completely wrong. What can I say? We all learn from our mistakes, and beleive me, I learned from this one. It is a mistake I will not make again. Thanks for your honest input!

Will you please stop swearing, you know it is not required to say Jesus f****ng Christ every time you post!

Corvidmaster is wrong because black has the opposition so the tactics trainer is sometimes wrong and this is 1 of the cases and corvidmaster cannot use the tactics trainer to get the solution because you can fail in a chess tournament playing a game that has this puzzle.

Can someone please put ''Thanks chessisfunforme'' on their message/messages for a help for correction?

Thanks "chessisfunforme", You are correct and so was "Chessoath" I was wrong. Thanks for your input.
