Isn't disabling premove cheating?

Dear chess.com staff and members,

Currently on chess.com, one has the option of disabling the premove function, which has existed as an integral part of the sport of online chess since its earliest days. Giving players access to said option, while seemingly harmless at first glance, in fact encourages cheating, as it gives those who exercise the option an unfair advantage over those who do not know how to disable premove, for the following reasons:

1. It reduces the chances of a misclick resulting in an unwanted move. In online games, especially those that are played under short time controls, many games are lost because of a misclick. With the premove function, it is possible to make a move as a result of a misclick during one's opponent's turn, whereas with the function disabled it is only possible to do so during one's own turn. Thus, disabling premove reduces a player's chances of making a fatal misclick, giving that player an unfair advantage over his or her opponent.

2. It eliminates the possibility of making a bad premove. When players are pressed for time, often they will resort to making premoves in a desperate attempt to avoid losing by timeout. In the process, there is a high possibilty that some of the premoves that they make will be terrible, usually due to insufficient consideration of the possible moves available to the opponent. Disabling the premove function is a foolproof method by which one can avoid such situations, without requiring any extra mental effort from the player - another unfair advantage gained from disabling premove.

3. Finally, on chess.com it gives one underserved bragging rights, as many beginners seem to be misled into thinking that having the premove function is actually an advantage. There have been numerous cases in the past in which a player who has diabled premove, after losing a game to a player that hasn't, shamelessly creates a thread on the forums complaining about his or her opponent "cheating" by making "illegal moves." Such threads have become so prevalent that they have misled many beginners, and even experienced players who should know better, into believing that the writers of these threads are speaking the truth. Thus honest players who understand that bearing the burden of the premove function is part of the game now have to endure not only misclicks and bad premoves, but also intense social stigma. If we allow this continue and develop further, then it is only a matter of time before these players begin leaving en masse, and the sport of online chess becomes gravely endangered, and pushed to the brink of extinction.

Therefore, I ask the chess.com staff to make the premove function mandatory for all players. I also ask my fellow chess.com members to graciously lend their support and join me in the fight to save online chess.

Sincerely,

macer75

Since you have to enable premove to execute premoving, the question, as phrased,  is nonsense...

But I think I get the gist of what you meant... No it isn't, if the web site ever wants to have "real tournoment" games (sanctioned) they will have to do something like that, to simulate the OTB experience...

Would you call it cheating if someone who has not disabled (or has enabled) the premove function does not make any premoves? And how about the promotion function (always queen on promotion)? Since it cannot be made mandatory should it be deleted? It is an advatage to use it for you 1) save some time, 2) avoid underpromotions by misclicks (it has happened to me), 3) will almost always promote your pawn to a queen, nonetheless.

(1) No, I would not consider it cheating. Even though one may not intend to make any premoves, as long as the function is enabled there is the chance that one may make a premove unintentionally as a result of a misclick.

(2) That is a good question, and admittedly one that I did not initially consider. As you pointed out, it cannot be made mandatory - so I would suggest that it be removed entirely, to eliminate scenarios where one player in a game has the function enabled, while his or her opponent has it disabled. I think it is debatable whether the function is an advantage or a disadvantage, but if it is eliminated entirely then both players would have the exact same advantage or disadvantage, and so it wouldn't matter which one it is.

I don't care whether my opponents use premoves or disable premoves, I want to win a game while I'm playing it... but I don't care about the result afterwards. Laughing
