Why do I keep going lower in my puzzles rating every day? I practice every day and i seem to get worse at those puzzles. What's more, i find many of the 1500- rated puzzles very complicated and they should be a master level puzzles actually. I'm not new in chess, so I have a lot of games behind my back. Is it that I'm getting old? I'm 32 years old.

You're consistently rushing your answers.  Tactics is about increasing your pattern recognition, not being the fastest,

Yes, but i try to improve my ratings in chess puzzles and chess rush and must be fast there sad.png

Rushing doesnt improve your game.

Thank you. You are right. It's that i had a rating of 1588 two days ago at puzzles and now it's under 1500 and things seem pointless and hopeless for me. After all 1588 is not that high for this site.

I've fluctuated over 200 points in a session before, multiple times. A lot of things can impact your performance in tactics, just like in a real game.

Take your time, don't do them when you're tired and try not to worry about the rating. Maybe even turn off the auto-advance and take additional time to look over other variations you may have worried about.

I'm 43 years old and do 5 puzzles a day. I started playing chess in january and you will see my puzzle rating has consistently improved to nearly 1500. So not your age. I ignore the clock. I follow a process of looking at all forcing moves first (checks and captures) to get my subcontous working on the problem. Then I start calculating candidates. There are normally multiple 'solutions' so you have to find the best one. For example, there may be a material gain but also mate in 4. If you dont find the mate you lose. It's a case of look for a move then look for a better one. That's the bit that takes the time, calculating enough to be confident that you have the correct solution. If I'm tired or not in the mood I get lazy with the calculation and start guessing, that's when the rating tilts.

First you get good. THEN you get fast.

you need to check the forcing moves (make candidates) , then calculate them.

Example : This is a 1700 rated puzzle.

https://www.chess.com/puzzles/problem/1201468

(I set up the board upside down, so disregard the coordinates)

What should you notice? (White just checked you with his queen.)

-> There are NO black pieces around black's king

So you have to find a way to run away without being mated. Simple!

Now where should the king run to?

Avatar of WolfAndrew_88

I think king to b1.

Also thank you all for the answers above. I will listen to your advices happy.png

King to b1 gets you mated

I wanted to hide next to him, but yes... then i will take it with my king

Play puzzle rush in survival mode.  Don't play the timed versions...they will just teach you to rush your moves, and to stop calculating and guess when you get frustrated.  These are bad habits, unless you plan to be a blitz player only for your entire life wink.png.
