Borislav Ivkov, a 3 time Yugoslavian Champion, was one of the great players of the so-called Fischer years.

For this game, played against Jan Hein Donner, during the 1965 Capablanca Memorial Ivkov, selected by a special committee, won a brilliancy prize of a set of ivory chessmen donated by Nicolas Rossoolimo.

"This is the kind of game I always admire; a new idea in the opening, an excellent conception of the middle-game, and , finally, a spectacular K-side attack, involving some sacrifices. I am fully satisfied with the decision of the committee that the ivory chess set which I donated should be awarded to Ivkov for this wonderful game."

Here is the crosstable from the 1965 event in which Fischer famously played from the Marshall Club in NYC after being denied permission from the State Department to travel to Cuba.

Very cool. The one game was well played.

Lots of tactics!

Love the photos! Ivkov played a lot of nice games.

Thanks.  Ivkov is one of those seldom-mentioned, underestimated players (like Atkins or Mitchell?) and the 1965 Capa Memorial was an unusual tournament.

simaginfan

Absolutely, on both counts!!

I recall reading that in one of the games during this tournament, due to a transmission error with the teletype, Fischer, playing black, answered his opponents 1.d4 with the common 1...Nf6, only to discover his opponent responded with 2.e5!!

Fischer, deciding it was too much trouble to complain, when he wasnt even in the country, played the black side of an Alekhine defence, (never a normal part of his repetoire with black) and won the game anyway.

I don't know that story. Thanks.

Here are some more images from that tournament, some from Habana, some from the Marshall Club:

The 1965 Capablaca Memorial was truly an historic event! I love this fine tournament story and the telling of it. I so very much agree with simaginfan, ...the photography captures the essence of this incredible gathering remarkably, especially the added images above! This is a sweet blog batgirl! Borislav Ivkov vs Jan Hein Donner, Brilliancy Prize game, is simply inspired play! The annotations are marvelous. Nicolas Rossoolimo, the prize donor encapsulated the significance of this special game beautifully, ...particularly the blazing kingside attack!

Great Stuff batgirl!!
