As you are new to chess, I will give you a game and a few pointers, tips etc along the way. I have challenged you.
Yahoo! chess is notorious for this. Chess.com is certinaly not immune, but it is much, much better here than it is there.
Yahcrap - sorry - Yahoo is KNOWN for hosting idiots and cheaters. Trust me, anywhere is better. Pogo is better. FICS is better. Here is way better. WCL is better, ICC is better.

I mean that thing where they kick you off the table...whatever they call it.
The "ejector-seat" thingy is called "booting"
There are many sites on the net that are like Yahoo. People go there not to play chess but to ridicule, curse at and just start problems. This site seems to be a lot better and I think that kind of attitude will not be toleratedhere. At least I hope not but my first indications are it won't be.

Remember that if you feel that something is worthy of punitive action you can always use the Report Abuse link at the bottom of every page. The staff here are very engaged and responsive and really are trying to make this a freindly fun place to come and play. Particularly with Yahoo! as your baseline, I'm sure you'll find chess.com a much more cohesive and welcoming community.

Like i played there for a couple hours once.. no1 said a thing and some people were nice.., and no1 was cheating as far as i could tell.
There are a lot of ********* out there, not much you can do about it really

Played a few live chess games recently. Most people say nothing, a few are polite and say hi, but the odd one or two like to throw out the insults when you make a mistake. I'm good as gold and polite and friendly as possible, but if someone bites I find it hard not to bite back.
In general this place is pretty clean. Go somewhere unmoderated like youtube and you'll see that the abuse gets pretty spectacular. A lot of nasty, snide people are good at hiding behind their computers, because if they ever said the kind of things they do online to someone on the street they'd be picking their teeth out of the gutter, and they know it too.
There are jerks in the real world, so we have to live with that.
Try pretending they don't exist.
Try pretending the world is free from them nasty jerks.
I am new to chess, I know the real basic stuff, like how the pieces move, etc. I don't understand why some people are such jerks. Not on this site but playing Chess on Yahoo games people love to put me down, tell how terrible I am. I know I'm not the best chess player(yet) but come on. All that does is motivate me to become a player. I guess I'm just venting here.
