Is chess just a game to you? or is it somthing more? Give me YOUR openion of what chess is to YOU.

Chess is a low stakes opportunity to stand at the edge of my mental capabilities.

Low stakes is important. This means I can make mistakes without letting it ruin my day or cost me my job.

I think one could actually clasify chess as an art.  I was thinking of writing an article on why.

For me chess is more than a game.

Anyone who has played a week or so worth of tournaments can tell you that it is more than just a game.  Since when has spades or yahtzee caused fatigue (or migraines)?  It's almost a language without words!

chess to me is more than "just a game" its a mind set ...

I say this because after a long day of doing mind numbing stuff, chess givs my mind a damn good work out ... one that word puzzles just can't do

Well, it is terribly satisfying a lot of the time and I do love it.  However, I worry I use it as sort of a mental junk food.  I'm also quite keen on chips.  Smile

to me, chess shows your mental capabilities, you can't really play chess and not be smart

chess is DEFINITELY more than just a game:

it is a hobby, a test of my mental capabilites, gives my brain a workout, my passion etc. etc.

plus a really good point is that ur parents cant not let u play chess, it is not just a game. chess can be classified as an 'educational game', this means a lot to parents... the word EDUCATIONAL... great excuse

Chess is definitely more than a game.  I like to think of chess as a sport of a graceful combination of logic, innate skill, and creativity.

Chess is a demanding game presuming certain requisite skills from its participants.  It becomes more than just a game when played professionally.

Chess is more than game.Chess is not like other games.Other games you don't need love to be good player but in chess, you really must love chess to become a good, great player.Chess is rich game,so beatiful, great combinations, amazing moves, beatiful mates,traps... Chess is also art but all chess players are not artists, only great players which know all beatiful of this "infection" game are artists. Many people say chess is boring, it is because they never meet chess, they missed much.

Chess is a culture, a mythology or blueprint on how to make decisions not only in a game but in life itself. Chess mirrors life by allowing mere mortals to become immortal if only for a whisper of a moment.

Chess is a game and also art for me.

 Here is why?

I don't mind losing but if I played my best game then I would enjoy it very much. Also I remember games that are beautiful although badly played by both parties. eg Altman vs Deep Fritz with all the White's pawn on the 4th rank.

Chess is a game.  I love playing the game, but there is spiritual, family, health, relationships, life.  As was pointed out in "The Karate Kid" there must be balance in your life.  No balance no quality of life.
