Just when you thought you've Won...

I think this happens to everyone, but I wanted to show you 2 games of mine, where you think you are just destroying the opponent (in the first game) and you lose---and the other where you think you have been getting destroyed (in the second game) and you win. (NOTE: The two games below are 5 minute live blitz games)

BTW-------did you notice in the second game, the checkmate at move 18 that white missed? See if you can find it.

By all means, show me some of your incredible comeback games...

Also, check out my blog post about a genius grandmaster who makes one of the most legendary chess-comebacks in the planet !!!

Game1:
I think you were doing well the whole time :)  Like on move 14 you said you could have sworn you were winning, but you're still a rook up!

Move 8 you made the right choice, Bd2 and you have a double attack (on his queen and rook).

Ouch, that premove was painful, like you said at the end, it was a draw but no time left... but you get revenge in game two!

Game 2:
Did you realize after you lost your queen 11...Qxe1 12.Qxe1 that by the point count... you're ahead by a point!  Don't let the queen blind you, you got two pieces and a rook for her, that's more than enough if everything else is equal.

You criticize your 16th move, but you win a pawn because of it, and now you're 2 points up!  Black is winning!

Hmm, I don't see the mate.  For move 18 I see Qe8+ but after Rf8 to block it I'm not sure how it helps white.

On move 29 Nd3 stops checkmate without losing the knight :)

True in first game, I am a rook up even when I lost queen, but I could have saved it and I'd be like 5-7 points ahead. In addition, later in the game, I let my rook get stuck and die to the knight, I could have saved it had I been a little more patient.

That premove cost me the game, it was a WIN for me by the end, all I had to do was martyr the rook on the pawn and i could have had 2 queens. But it was 5 min game, and time always runs out.

On 11th move, I could have saved queen by moving bishop instead. Then I'd have a huge lead.

On 16th move, yes that's true, but I would imagine I might have had better use for it alive... Not sure if the trade was worth the 1 point extra.

Yes, there is no mate on Qe8+ or move 18, I think I wasn't looking at it right.

I'm sure for the high rated players, this game must look sooooo awful, filled with so many blunders :P.

Heh, no worries, five minute games are fun because they're exciting and you don't always have time to find the best moves :) my games have plenty of blunders too.  I wish I had some comebacks to show you, but I've been trying to stay away from online chess for a while, and don't record any of my club games Smile

You don't have any good wins where you were down for even a tiny bit before you went back up? I find that hard to believe with the amount you play :).

I usually have a lot of work to do, so I have to play 5 minute games to not waste hours of the day. However, I realize I lose a lot of 5 min games to time-pressure or mistake due to time pressure. In 10 minutes, I usually win more often. I haven't played online chess in like a year.

Sure I do, but I don't remember the specific moves :)  One of my favorites was against a strong expert who was up the exchange and maybe even a pawn or two, but started to not pay attention because he thought it would be too easy from there.  In the game before I had dropped my queen for nothing so I guess he thought I was pretty bad.  He started talking to someone else in between moves, I managed to create some threats but he ignored them, when they became serious he started giving the game his full attention again, but it was too late, and I ended up winning after being hopelessly outplayed.

One game online I dropped my queen for just about nothing.  The guy I was playing was a complete beginner, I just had a mouse slip, and he started saying all kinds of nasty things.  Well I kept playing anyway and a few moves later he got his queen trapped in the middle of the board (lots of places to move, but all of them covered).  He used a ton of time to figure out it couldn't escape, and I ended up winning in the endgame hehe.

chesteroz

Easy to spot now but in first game 62. Rc3 and you win with queen pin.

@orangehonda, if you still have the game, perhaps u can diagram it for us :D. Both sound very interesting. Hopefully one day, I'll be able to beat an expert like that.

chesteroz, you know what's funny? I actually thought of that pin move ever so slightly before I looked at the clock saying 2.3 seconds, and decided to cowardly run away instead... I guess I thought he could take it or check me again somehow so I didn't bother even giving it a second of thought.
