I can't call him a "coach" but there was a great relationship between Botvinnik and Kasparov.
Kasparov is slaughtering Nakamura and So.

This is a good thread for predictions on the blitz result. My prediction is:
1st Nakamura (fastest thinker)
2nd Caruana (playing the best)
3rd Kasparov (best class but oldest)
4th So (most practical but the slowest)
Fastest thinker doesn't matter because of the 3 sec delay...
Prediction:
*Nakamura first; comes out on top in time scrambles, best speed player of the four.
*Kasparov second; clearly still able to compete with the best today. Gets better positions, but often loses to time, so if he can work on this, he will be very good.
*Caruana/So not sure but 3rd/4th.
Kasparov still has the magic touch. Without the rush of layoff, Kasparov could have played better in this tournament and might have won it.

It's not over yet. Tomorrow they play the second half of the event. :D

Yeah. But I don't know if the rounds tomorrow is enough to shake of the rust. Imagine prime Kasparov in this tournament.
I feel that prime Kasparov would be competitive for #1 even with today's players. His peak elo WAS 2850+.

Just shows how much of a fraud Magnus is. He has easy competition.
Blitz and classical chess are two very different things.

I'm not sure I know what you mean by slaughtering...Kasparov is in 3rd place out of 4 players.
Competitive? Sure, given. Slaughtering? Nope.

The world's most talented chessplayers don't waste their lives playing chess.
I went to school within a quarter-mile of the Manhattan Chess Club throughout my teens and never set foot in there until I had moved away from NYC.
Shut up. No one wants to here you troll.

Up on the latest? Kasparov has So on the ropes two times. But Kasparov blundered. Kasparov also has a good advantage against Caruana in one of the game. In these games Kasparov get good positions from the opening and middle game. Kasparov messed up winning positions due to age and rust. Kasparov in his prime will slaughter So, Nakamura and Caruana.

Glad Naka let Garry replace his knight, it was the correct decision in my view. Can you get the PGN for the games anywhere? I really want to see the So vs Naka game where So recaptured with his queen and Naka resigned. I don't really know what happened in that game.
Kasparov is after all more than ten years into retirement, very impressive play against for example a very strong blitz player like So, who is around the same strength as title match participant Karjakin. OK that Kasparov hung a piece twice due to rust, otherwise it could easily have been 3-0 in those games.
It's my memory that Kasparov avoided non classical chess. For example I don't think he ever played in the Amber blind and rapid tournaments.
Botvinnik, Kasparov's coach, prohibited Kasparov from playing rapid or blitz.
Botvinnik wasn't Kasparov's coach.
