king size

I've recently bought a chess set for my brother. Nice set with a 4"king total height. So thought id get myself one too .Thing is shop said we don't sell any sets with 4" kings and never have !,nearest is 3.75" king. But I remember reading g an article years ago on pieces and it said that the height of the king was measured from base to base of cross not the tip. This would account for discrepancy but shop and other retailers said they count the cross in measurements so how come he got a set with 4"kings from shop that doesn't sell them!? If I remember right the article 30 years ago said they don't count the cross in measurements as sometimes they were being made with the most ridiculous crosses on top. Any input would be grateful as I don't want a 3.75 king nor do I want to order a set with a 4" king and find it to be 4.25 and perhaps too big for board.
