King still alive after resigning or time out in 4 Player modes

Inside 4 player FFA, when one player times out or resigns, their pieces become dead, but with one exception, the King. It will still exist after the player resigns or time out, and it will move randomly or be moved by AI, does anyone know why the king still exist even after its player resign or time out? Kinda doesnt make any sense to me.
