knight versus knight not automatic draw

I played a game which ended in a knight versus knight endgame that was not an automatic draw. I had to jump around like a maniac in the zeitnot. Please fix this bug!

Is it a bug ?  FIDE rules say :

"The game is drawn when a position has arisen in which neither player can checkmate the opponent’s king with any series of legal moves. The game is said to end in a ‘dead position’. This immediately ends the game..."

K+N vs K+N can end in checkmate through a series of legal moves, if one side is determined to lose, so I don't see anything in the rules that suggests it should be an automatic draw

It might be theoretically possible if the two opponents conspire to achieve this result. It is however utterly impossible to force and allows for the opponent to try exploiting your zeitnot in an unethical way.

I agree the King and Knight game is drawn

Still not an automatic draw under FIDE rules, which was the basis for your complaint.

We know that, but is it an automatic draw ? FIDE rules do not say it is.

I think related to this are the newer and better Fischer timings. The problem with "sudden death" was that the arbiters would have to decide wether the player with a material(time) advantage was "making progress".

Of course this suggests that the arbiter has an appreciation of chess equal to the players, and knows a lot of endgame theory - which he may well do. Another win for a single knight, is if the other players king and rook pawn are configured to allow/force a smothered mate.

I reached a position in a recent game of B vs B. I was surprised that it was not auto drawn. I agreed to a draw even though I was way up on time, cause it was always an auto draw before, and the "fight" was over.

Clearly it's not an autodraw and there is no bug. Play with an increment to avoid all situations like this.

There is NEVER any excuse not to play with an increment, unless you like the time-swindling nonsense.

Nothing wrong with that.

Just had a game that ended in a automatic draw when it was knight on knight. I think the game should continue until some other draw condition is reached.
