Know what really irks me?

It is mostly because they don't notice the chat. Don't blame it on them if they don't look down!

Vance,

When the American way is the only way as it is on so many topics, do you really wonder why some are irked? Peace!

I'm an American, Metal Mate, and I do not believe the American way is the only way.  One thing I like about this site is that one can learn about others around the world. I know many Americans that do not believe our way of life is the only way.

Well, we all have situations that irk us, don't we?

Mostly, it's over small potatoes that offend our ego...disrespect.

In chess, how much more disrespected can you get when you win and the loser screams YOU CHEATED!!! throws the board, with all the pieces on it, up in the air!

Now that is what IRKS me. (Happened to me back in '59...it's in my bio).

Maybe I'm just "old school," but trash-talking is not part of chess. Thankfully, it seems that only a few players here seem to think it is. And, yes, disabling chat for those players resolves this difference of opinion satisfactorily.

I wish more players would use the chat.  I don't understand why, when you type a simple "hello" in the chat box and you never get an answer.  For me, part of playing chess online here is to meet people from around the world.

I suppose some just want to play to boost their ratings, and chatting is a distraction. I enjoy chatting while playing, but then, I play just for the sheer enjoyment of it.  I would enjoy playing a game with you, but at the moment I am playing all of the games I am able to keep up with.

sometimes I'm so focused I didn't see what my opponent typed or maybe I'm watching a youtube vid while waiting for his next moves so I didn't read it

SILVERBUG

I just say "good game" and I move on.  The worse thing you can do is communicate with another player who is being negative.  They feed on your response.  You will forget about them in 30 seconds.

As far as chatting, it has been my experience in real life that most other chess players simply want to kill you and suck your blood.

Being a friendly sort, I always have to remind myself of this.

Politeness: yes.

Friendship: as Clint Eastwood said: "Get a dog".

Hey, I'm just reporting the news.

Ooops...duplicated.

"Delete" doesn't actually delete a post, it would appear.

Yes, that has happened to me, but I do not turn off the Chat.

Yes, negative players should have the Chat turned off, and refuse to play them again, if possible.

What's the american way? I'm looking for it.

The "American Way" is to complain about everything. Americans all like a fine whine.

wishiwonthatone

never cared much for whine, but bheer. Now there's something to care about.

Fallacious universal statements are often bandied about. Your very comment is, itself, a whine.

You generalize far, far too much. You include me and everyone I know who isn't a whiner in your sophistry. One ought not make sweeping generalizations so flippantly.

I suppose so, but I also just like to play for the enjoyment of it.  Hit me up for a game some time.

Well, "irk" is sometimes too  limiting. "Abhor"...that's the ticket.

Stepping on dog doo-doo is both irksome and abhorrent to me. Especially since I don't even have a dog.

I'm sick and tired of being told that I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired.
