Hi All

If any of you own both or either of these books please help me:

a)Lasker's Manual of Chess  by the Great Emanuel Lasker

b) Chess fundamentals by the amazing Capablanca

I was wondering if it was a good book for a beginner to read who wants to learn the game. I ask because i know theres tons of other reads and easier to read books, but i feel as long as i can comprehend these writings its an excellent start. I am just not too sure if as a beginner it is too technical.

thanks

I think it is okay for even a beginner to try to wade into material that is seemingly beyond your ability, I think it is healthy for your brain to feel it's "in over it's head" as it were. The idea is to simply keep re-reading. I think most of us try to hammer our way through to chess mastery as quickly as we can, and we don't really admit to ourselves the way in which we're actually slowly absorbing the material. Your mind is a sponge, just don't over stress it, gently expose it to the material, play variations out on a chess board, breathe, enjoy... trust that it is all getting in there. Let time take it's course!

Chess Fundamentals is absolutely worth reading for a beginner. Most of the technical stuff in that one is very well explained, though I have wished some the annotations of example games were a bit more detailed.
