How the Mind Works by Steven Pinker. He mentions chess several times, The book is dated because Deep Blue had not beat Kasparov yet (it won the following year), which he predicted. Could have already done that with checkers.

Still reading VIZ#167. Upto Rogers profanisaurus at the mo! Here's a good one: Disneyland; A woman who takes an inordinate amount of time and a large amount of money to get into, although once you do, all the rides are free. Also known as Legoverland.
My girlfriend and I made a deal that if I read all the Harry Potters, she would read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I had only read the first book which is 300 pgs. and an easy read so it kindof made sense at the time. Well, now I am on the sixth book and it was all downhill from the first one, so it was a pretty bad trade in hindsight. So that one and a couple of chess and mazes books.
