#1 Ironically if my opponent were to promote 5 queens I'd gladly continue without resigning cuz there's a high probability of stalemate lol.

Resigning gracefully is an important part of sportsmanship. It shows your opponent respect

It depends on how you live chess.

Those who look at the chessboard as a kind of combat cage do not give up on principle.

Those who follow their coach's recommendations to continue until the end ( even if the situation is compromised ) because in this way they can acquire the right predisposition to catch every opportunity that arises, do not resign.

Those who think that continuing even in lost conditions is a useful exercise to enhance their defensive skills, do not resign.

Those who are interested in the result do not resign, they hope until the end because mistakes are part of the game. And maybe they're in a lost position because they were the first to make a stupid blunder, so they can legitimately hope that their opponent will do the same...

There is no disrespect in this. It's not very "chivalrous", but it's not disrespectful. Disrespect is insulting, or cheating, for example.

Sportsmanship is accepting defeat, of course, but what does defeat mean ? The rules say that the game ends when one of the two gives checkmate, not when he reaches a winning position. There are rules made specifically for drawing even in a scrambled position ( stalmate, triple repetition...). And unless you're a high-level chess player, the probability of a blunder is never zero. Especially online, where you can play even while queuing at the post office, or during your coffee break with all your colleagues talking around and distracting you.

Everyone has their own way of looking at things. The point is that, as someone has already pointed out, no one can impose his chess creed on others, for example by "punishing" (???) those who do not conform to his idea, which he thinks to be the only valid one. When two people meet in front of a chessboard, the only rules they have to observe are the Rules of the Game. If he plays correctly ( no stalling etc. ), everyone can play as they want.

There are three types of bad behaviour when a game is clearly lost:

  • Abandoning the game so the opponent's time is wasted
  • Slow-playing the game - if you want to play on then do, but accept it's respectful to move a lot more quickly than usual
  • Toying with an opponent and collecting queens rather than just finishing the game

All of these things are just as bad as each other, and all should be called out.

This question of whether you should play on seems to come up a lot on the forum. This could be resolved by a setting in the custom section when we click to play a game. It could be set so we only play opponents whose percentage of defeats are by resignation is above a certain level.

For instance, only 12% of my defeats are by resignation as I like to play on. For the OP it is 58%. If there was a setting where the OP could say they only want to play people with at least 40% of defeats are by resignation, then this sort of thing is less likely to happen to them.
I totally agree everyone should be able to play the game they see fit. So it would be good if the settings could changed so people can be matched with people who have similar views on this subject.

So if someone won't resign, it's 100% acceptable to collect queens. I'll get 9 if I can. And unlike stalling it is NOT a reportable offense.

Acceptable: yes. Getting you respect: rather the opposite.
