When I've played chess in coffee houses, restaurants, and pubs, it always generates interest. Some bars have chess sets hidden behind the counter, too. But they are usually those small, hollow plastic pieces that you can buy for $2 at Piggly Wiggly.
I don't know about restaurants and bars but mental hospitals do generally have chess sets.
