Would you say, reading a chess book, learning from it,puttiing it into pratice in a game, cheating, I ask this because I have done this and now a member of chess.com will not play me now as they would rather play a more natural player. Im not using the book during the game.

Actually according to the Chess.com rules, it is OK to use books during a game:

http://support.chess.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=17&nav=0,6

You may NOT get any help from any person or any chess engine that analyzes your specific position, including tablebases. You MAY use books, magazines, or other articles. You may also use computer databases. EXCEPTION: If both players agree for the use of a chess engine in an UNRATED game then it can be allowed.

i think to use books for openings is okey, since most people have learnt different openings through books and similars. Those who dont use books/articles have seen the openings before, and memorized it. Like most people say: chess openings IS memorization.

Books during a game is fine, in my opinion, and according to chess.com. Anything that cannot do the thinking for you is acceptable in correspondence.

im not using it during nachos im just reading books when im not playing, once i play a game i put the book away and play,i only want to improve my chess so can beat better players

in my opinion, once the game started... books should be set aside. but on OTB nothing matters.... honesty depends on the individual playing.. and I admire plaYERS WHO WERE PLAYING HONESTLY AND SHOWS GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP[.

What you're doing: using books to get better is completely alright, and its very silly of your opponent to do that. However, using "books" "during" a game is a more touchy subject; while it is cheating in OTB chess, I cannot say what the verdict is for Correspondence Chess.

edit: There seem to be some people who do not understand your query. You're talking of using chess book when not playing a game, yes?

Yes, thats perfectly fine. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

If two people were playing a sport, and one didn't like playing the other because he "practices" then, well, to me that just seems dumb and it would go the same for your situation.

In correspondence type games it is perfectly legal to use books and Dbases. And if you want to improve your chess then that's a good way to learn the opening lines and common "traps". Your opponent also has that right. So - it might seem uncreative at times but eventually someone is going to make a move which takes the game into unknown territory. Or in the case of certain "traps" you might end up playing the same game several times against different opponents if that line produces a win and your opponent doesn't know it's a trap. I have a book on the Caro-Kann which gives an illustrative game of 14 moves which the GM author says has been played many times and which he himself has won with on three occasions. Of course this was done OTB where no books are allowed - only memory and creativity. OTB is probably the best test of a player's "natural" or "true" ability.

cheers for that reply ;)
