White to play. How/why do the rules prohibit Ke6?

The Knight at c5....

The Knight at c5 is pinned. So it doesn't cover e6?

You are not allowed to enter yourself into Check. Yes the Knight is pinned, but it still will be check if you move to e6.

Thank you. This distinction cost me the game. Is this by rule, or is it the way the software is written for chess.com? Are these the same?

That is a chess rule. Pinned pieces still attack squares and kings can never move into an attacked square (i.e. can never move into check).

OK. I really appreciate you both clearing this up for me.

Nice job on salvaging a draw from that.

Look at it this way: what happens if you play Ke6? the knight takes your king, and then you would take black's king, but your king died first therefore you lose.
