You're doing it wrong.
5...Nxe5 and White can resign.

I love the Legal Legal trap.

There should be a name for it.

Holy crap. That is amazing.

Urk- white can resign only if blacks response isn't Bxd1. Most players under 1500 will take that Queen if they don't know this trap.

Play the board, not the opponent.

Yes. Playing Nxe5 without kicking the bishop from g4 with h3 just hangs a piece.

Cant believe people are getting even the Legal's mate wrong.

This guy stumbled into a legitimate Legal and didn't realize it.

I disagree, bronstein. Psychology plays a big part in most people's game and you should use that to your advantage

Actually, BronsteinPawn is right. I won a game with Legal's mate, and I first played h3 first to kick the bishop before taking e5 with the knight. Black's best move is to retake the white knight on e5 with the knight rather than take the queen, protecting the hanging bishop and avoiding mate. Then white is down a piece for nothing. I think people's eyes get big when they see the free queen, so, sometimes it does work without h3.

This is an example of why one should at least be aware of traps. I beat someone rated much higher than me who never had heard of Legal's Mate.

Bronsteinpawn is very right. Without h3 you're down a piece. With h3 the best black can play for us being down a pawn. Seriously guys this is basic stuff

5.Nxe5 is a blunder, but it's possible that historically that's actually how it went the first time. We call it the Sea Cadet mate from the opera Der Seekadett, where this was played out on stage.

In my own beginner's book it's depicted without Nc6, instead black makes some random pawn moves.
