I think a lot of the time it is just a way to make their opponent waste time. Sometimes they are looking for any resource they can to save the game and run out of time. Others may just lose connection.
Letting the clock run out.

Thats what im debating about this...Is it a way "spite" your opponent? Or is it simply a way of saying "I lost on time"

The worst is when they do this in the last game of a tournment round and everybody, not just their opponent, has to wait for the next round to begin. They may not have known it was the last game of the round, so there just needs to be a special punishment for players who disconnenct during tournament games, such as automatically invoking the fair play policy penalty (whatever that is, I'm unsure) instead of giving them several chances.
Letting the time run out in a lost position is the coward's way of resigning.
There can be exceptions of course. Like someone loosing access to the Internet. Or someone looking at the position trying to find a rescue, then having a break leaving the game for a while. Coming back finding no rescue taking another break and so on. Then suddenly the time runs out. That can happen.
But just leaving the game with no further interest instead of resigning is pathetic.

I would say a lot of the time it is for spite.

They should resign. With the exception of bullet games , of course...if they have only a few seconds left.
It is annoying and many do it for that effect. There have been times when the phone rings or door rings and you can't deal with quick enough. A new problem I have discovered in recent weeks is that there no resign button using my Andriod Tablet. So I am not sure what is best to do. Try and self mate maybe?

Resign should be there. I don't play Live on the app much but it should be there, probably in the menu like it is in Daily. If not, you might log off and clear the app cache.

I agree with Martin. It`s from SPITE. Losing the.connection is a possibility but I`d wager SPITE.COWARDICE RUDENESS & A BITCHE`S VIEW OF LIFE is the cause 99.99999999999999% of the time.
I'm late here, but just wanted to contribute that it is definitely spite, at least on some of the occurrences. Recently, I played a 10 minute blitz game that turned out to be a great example. Early in the game I went up a knight on my opponents blunder. We both still had over 9 minutes left. Thinking he might resign, or maybe play on (plenty of time left for me to blunder as well), he simply types "great draw bye" and offers a draw, refusing to make any further moves. I declined the draw, and he proceeded to waste time. Jokingly, I asked him if he would prefer me to resign, or if he just wants a draw. He responded "draw is fine," and re-offered the draw. I only did this to see if he was actually still there. I declined the draw, and he ultimately went on to waste 9 minutes, only to make a move with 4 seconds left. I guess this was the "maybe he walked away and I will win on time" play. I made a move back, and won on time. I have now blocked this user. On chess.com, we have all experienced abandoned games and wasted time. This one was overly blatant in my opinion.

He might have been, say, 12 years old. He got you writing here, and wasted even more of your time. To top it off he also wasted my time. Let's report that little bugger!

That's what Im talking about. I dont know what people like that are thinking? Terrible sportsmanship, Its not like we are playing for money or a world title.

C'mon both you and your opponent agreed to play within a certain time control, so you opponent has every right to use the time allotted in whatever way he/she sees fit.
Unfortunately, the best antidote for this is to get better at the game. I see less of stalling in a lost position at higher levels (1600+) than when I was around 1200s or lower. I've had my opponent let the clock run out in a real over the board tournament. My opponent (was rated approx 1000) got into a losing position, sat there for an hour, while i took long walks. There was nothing I could do about it even in that situation.

no Thornweight, your opinion is perfectly valid, it's a lesson to be learned about the general character of the players you'll often encounter on chess.com. I concur wholeheartedly with your conclusions especially your decision to block the guy. Don't let others like the Norwegian Estren belittle the value of that experience. I consider it highly representative of what you'll find with disturbing regularity on chess.com. It seems like a picnic basket at first sight. But as you start to play regularly on chess. com you also start to discover unpleasant facts of cyber life like the little bamboozle you suffered at the hands of that imbecile. The picnic basket garishly metamorphoses into a horrid handbasket filled with writhing serpents. PECK! PECK! SLASH! Their forked tongues flicker furiously forward when it comes to them losing which they hate.Yes! It is out of spite. A petty sore loser making you pay to the ultimate farthing of time for your victory. i feel it is justified to be a bastard in response to microcephalic Neanderthals who play games of the booshee like that numbskull nincompoop you beat. Carry on Thornweight!
People that let the clock run out instead of resigning. Do they really think its less of a loss?
