Letting the time run

Interesting discussion.

One thing the site could do is to track such a metric behind the scenes, and then to see if it matches up against abuse reports.

Also one point you haven't addressed is how increments would play a role. If I'm playing a 30 30 game (which I would never do LOL) but if I were, then it's not nearly as big a deal for me to flag when my previous move was made with 1 min left.

This is the only option I find reasonable.

I think the problem is too many peope are worried about their ratings. If you get a bad opponent, just quit yourself. Stop worrying about your ratings. They don't mean anything, they are just a guide as to your approximate strength. I was playing a game with this idiot who after 3 moves into the game starting making racist remarks about Obama. Since I refuse to play any racist, I just said "You know what? Goodbye" & quit my game. I lost 30 rating points. But you know what? Big deal. So I have an extra loss to my record. The loss & ratings drop isn't going to make me any better or worse as a player. So my opinion is if you're playing someone who annoys, offends, or is a racist, just quit your game.

You'l actually feel a lot better

Yes but in many case you then end up giving the person what they want-- rating points for themselves, or the satisfaction of "winning", and just encouraging them to do more of it.

Why not turn off the chat instead of resigning?

OK, IT Hppens once. You agreed to another game?????

Sometimes somethig comes up, like having to go to the bathroom.  In my case, my wife is disabled, and when she needs help often i must go instantly.  I try to hit the resign button, but sometimes it is not quick enough.

When it happens to me, I try to be forgiving, because I don't know what is goig on.  In the old days, the site would sometimes toss you out for inactivity with the win going to your opponent.

I would like to add some comments.

1.  Live chess continues to be very unstable.

2.  I thought letting the time run out means the one letting it run out loses.

3.  One minute seems unreasonable in a 30 minute game.

4. Question:  I have never played tournaments, and used a clock that you push buttons on, but someone who does should possibly give some advice?  I understand that even though you push the buttons, aren't there two clocks?   One for each move and another for overall total time?  Shouldn't this figure into the solution?

5.  As others have mentioned there are situations that come up as answering the phone, door, bathroom calls.

6. Many times during previous heated discussions about other issues the management team has decided to consider all factors before trying a quick fix  that actually creates more problems or meets with violent opposition.

How about if there was a specific reporting feature just for this, if individuals are consistently reported time and time again, it could trigger an automatic email in the first instance to say that they shouldn’t continue to act in this way.

It would be easy to set up an algorithm based on reports issued in games that they lost.  For example, the email could be triggered if you get reported more than 20% of the time on games that you loose or end up finally resigning in.

Just spent the last 8 min, watching the clock run down for no apparent reason in a 15 min game, and not for the first time.
