Maybe the "fake" personas created online represent the repressed versions of the self which are impossible to obtain in the sphere of... bah, I need another beer.

On the other hand, people have very strong incentives to be nice in real life, because if they are assholes, they will be treated harshly by others in return and will develop a reputation that will cause all kinds of problems for them. The consequences of being an asshole online are much less severe, so maybe assholes make less of an effort to be nice online than they do in person.
