Depends on the club, I suppose. I never would use the word "pretentious" for my local club.

I would much rather play OTB at a club than play live chess on line. I like the personal interaction, some people rub me the wrong way, but that's kind of the way life it.

I go to my chess club weekly, and I quite like it there because of the experience with other chess players, and you get to see them face-to-face.

True, some do have a little of an attitude... Wink

I think the nature of chess can make it hard to be friendly and friends with your competitors.  The whole club isn't pretentious, some of the members are jerks, but over all everyone is pleasant, helpful, accepting, and friendly ( and sometimes even a little humble ) to each other

Yes - in the OTB world, some folks are totally cool, but others take themselves way too seriously.

So you can beat some folks at your local chess club - that's great. But don't act like you're damn Bobby Fischer. Come to think of it, even if you can play like Fischer, you shouldn't act like him.

The best part about the club for me is the discussions after the games!! thats what is missing with online chess... soon as the game is over thats it
