Friend of mine divorced his wife because she became addicted to World of Warcraft to the point where she was playing about 18-20 hours a day.

If she was playing on the Internet that much there were problems there already.

Prolonged use of the internet is irrelevant... The reason humans become depressed from lack of social interaction is because they stop the production of oxytocin

Which is due to the prolonged use of the internet?

Who are lonely? Those who are physically alone, or those that are not loved?

I'd rather be a isolated chess player than listen to some verbally incontinent dipstick rattle on about their views on whatever - invariably predicated on the assumption I'm interested.

It would be wonderful if people came equipped with a chat bar... hmmm

Chess is a peculiar game because it produces a degree of isolation and obsessiveness that no other game in the world does.  The great Paul Morphy has several quotes where he warns people to keep chess in its proper place in life i.e., as a recreation.  Morphy gave up playing at age 22 because he had nothing left to prove and wanted to live his life.  I think his insights about the place for chess in a person's life were very astute and virtually indisputable.

We could ask a chicken/egg type question here. Do some people play chess because they are lonely or are some people lonely because they play chess? I think the better question is though, is chess an antidote to loneliness and I would argue that the answer is yes. I've often felt much better after having engaged in a game or two of online chess with a person from another part of the world. There are times when I'm lonely and times when I am happily engaged in the company of others. I don't mind saying that and, in any case, loneliness is often part of the condition of the 21st century individual. It's a common experience for many and chess helps.
