Does anyone know of a chess dictionary that includes modern slang terms & modern conversational chess lingo? I'm a beginner and the learning curve of reading instructions is pretty severe and teachers /writers tend to assume the student is familiar with terms.

Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away, someone published a chess dictionary and there were also a chess companion and a number of chess encyclopedias that included (sometimes conflicting) definitions. I am unable to think of anything like that being published in the last few decades. There is a little bit of a dictionary feel to a book by Silman on Strategy.

Someone once produced a book that attempted to sort out the names, ECO codes, and NIC codes for openings.

Well, learning the lingo shouldn't be tough if you know basic terms. These are learned by going through chess tutorials with diagrams. If you are new to chess, then it is not surprising you don't know the slang terms. So, first you should learn how rooks move before understanding the term "rover".

"... [The Mammoth Book of Chess by Graham Burgess] is divided into three parts, ... The bulk of Part Three is the 'Glossary of Chess Terms' chapter and this will indeed be quite useful for the beginning player. It is probably the most extensive glossary that I have come across. ..."
