To improve you only need players strong enough to beat you, but not strong enough to beat you easily. Then you will learn better. try playing 1800-2000 players. They will be tough enough to beat you more often then you would beat them. And ask them to go over the game with you after.

P.S. You're right unrated would appeal more in general though. Some wont care anyway mind you.

play against yourself, that is what bobby fisher did.
