Welcome to chess.com and the world of chess! There are general principles in all three stages of a game. In the opening you use pawns to get a foothold in the center of the board. By developing your Knights close to the center they both guard your pawns and give you more control of the center. Your Bishops also can help in controlling it as well. They can do that or attack your opponent's units from a safe distance. Rooks can do the same thing and far from the action too. Your Queen, likewise. It's not a good idea to bring it out too early. If captured for little in return the loss of material will make a game very difficult or impossible to win. And you want to castle your King into safety early in the game since its welfare decides the game. In the middle game, give your pieces mobility and make them cooperate to mate the other King and/or carry out attacks to deprive your opponent of the ability to resist. And in the endgame the King now gets into the game as a warrior. He helps to get pawns passed and promoted to Queen(s), Rooks and other pieces more powerful than a pawn. And he also helps attack the other King. You'll have to learn the basic checkmates such as King and Queen vs. a King, or a King and one or both Rooks vs. a King, or King and either both Bishops or King/Bishop/Knight vs. a King. A King and two Knights (I *think*) can mate a lone King. One funny thing to remember is that the more powerful a piece or pieces working with your King are, the greater the chance of accidentally stalemating your adversary's King. Stalemate means it's your opponent's turn to move and no units can move at all and the King can't step on a square where he won't be in check, which is forbidden. If this is confusing your husband can set up a board and demonstrate these concepts. Good luck and I hope you enjoy it!
