Try an older copy of Chessmaster. Chessmaster 9000 is only $10, has most of the tutorials, and plays similarly at the beginner level. :)

In my opinion, you should just play lots of games and see what works, and what doesn't. =D It's better than expensive professional programs. But If you had to, you could buy a lower version of chessmaster since they always have the lessons. Also! Remember you can get tactic trainer and learn from the pros at chess.com =D Just pay $80 a year or $500 for life! (Doing this so Erik doesn't have to) =P
So I think I'll buy CM 10, it's pretty cheap in Poland, but I also want to try immediately start learning from some freewares.
download the Arena software and a good free engine.
a good engine for a beginner is LaMoSca, which is very easy to beat

There are some good free online lessons here. They were written for children, but adults can learn from them too. Should take a couple weeks to go through.
Hi, I'm new and honestly, I don't know anything about chess. But I want to start playing it, so I've got small favor. Can anyone direct me to some PC game good for learning the basics? I was about to buy XI Chessmaster, but it's far to expensive for me, so i'd prefer free software (but not necessarily).
I'll be very graceful for every advice.
PS: Sorry for mistakes in my english if there was some =]
