Hi Bob,
Some possibilities, in no particular order:
Tarrasch Chess GUI - http://www.triplehappy.com/
Easy to get started and easy to use, but limited features. Sort of "Plain Jane" in the looks department.
Arena - http://www.playwitharena.com/
Good all-around, popular GUI, although weak in the database capability department.
Scid vs. PC - http://scidvspc.sourceforge.net/index.html
Another popular GUI, with great database capabilities.
Winboard - http://www.open-aurec.com/wbforum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=51528
Maybe a bit less user-friendly, but it's rock-solid stable. In recent years, the author has been working on making it more user friendly.
Lucas Chess - http://www-lucaschess.rhcloud.com/index
Good for training and playing against lots of different engine strengths. Not the best documentation, though.
