In general the queen represents dynamic play.
If you have an advantage like king safety or initiative then you should keep the queen.
However if your advantage is something more long term like pawn structure or material, then a queen trade will favor you.
To be less dependent on the queen, learn more about chess stuff. Endgames, strategy, tactics. I often recommend Seirawan's winning chess series of books.
Long story short I Am extremely dependent on my queen. My opponents very often go for a queen trade and this has always been a huge problem for me.
I either take the trade and feel lost. Or I attempt to run away putting me in a poor position.
