As long as your opponent has a theoretical possibility to win you will lose the game if you dont have any time left. Now your opponent had some pawns and thus a theoretical oppurtunity to checkmate your king. If he wouldnt have any pawns left and thus only his king it would be a draw if you didnt have any time left.
