Hey, I just wanted to know what you guys do when your on a losing streak, I haven't played one good game of chess in the last 2 weeks, before that I was playing great game after game, now I more or less just throw my pieces away, any advice?

I find that have ~month-long spurts of chess fever, devouring my books and Chess Life magazine. At the end of that spurt I don't believe I'm a better player consciously. However, I then take a few-weeks-to-a-month-long break, and when my next spurt of chess fever hits, I can tell I'm a better player.

So it appears that most of my subconscious learning that makes me a better player happens when my mind is completely off of chess for awhile.

This relates to your post in the following way: Take a break from a chess for a while, and when you come back, you'll find you have a clearer mind while playing.

When i am in one of these slumps... especially when it comes to live bullet, I only play if my mind is 100% ready to focus. If im not sure how i feel before i begin a game the outcome is usually bad. This time of year, recovering from colds and holidays etc. im generally a little more tired and not as focused. so, my advice to you would be to only play if you feel you can focus 100%

Something handy might be for you to plug in your game to a chess program, or play your opening lines vs. a computer and see where the variations start. Or just simply take a deep breath, say "goose-fra-bah" and try again. Wink
