Losing to the Loony

Kasparov was soundly defeated in his bid to lead FIDE a few months ago.

A few years ago, Karpov suffered a similar trouncing in the same effort.

These two gentlemen were the best players of our age, and while they may have personal eccentricities or histories that are not everyone's cup of tea, they are not nuts.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for FIDE's current Tsar, who has held the post for so long now that it's become apparent that FIDE has become a cult of personality, and is no longer recognizable as a typical sporting organization.

We deserve what we get. The USCF, which is run like a backyard after-school club, and FIDE, whose leader swears chess was invented by aliens and who claims he has spent some time with them.

Next time someone wants to take chess to the "the next level," keep this in mind. Organized chess is joke, run by cranks and crazies. And don't forget our own dead white God, Mr. Fischer, the most unlovely one of them all.

No wonder scholastic leagues are tanking. Being a part of organized chess is embarrassing. I'm going to tell people I'm going to a rocks and minerals show for now on, instead of a chess tournament.

If you started hanging around with rocks and minerals collectors, you might realize that chess players aren't the only lunatics.

I doubt it. It's that kind of relativism and denial of our sordid, sorry state that has kept us where we so dearly belong, in the eyes of the rest of the word: One Big Joke.

We could do a lot worse than who's in charge of FIDE. From his wikipedia article:

"Since November 1995, Ilyumzhinov has been President of the World Chess Federation, investing a large amount of his private fortune into the game. He has been enthusiastic about attracting international tournaments to Kalmykia, and many grandmasters have done so. His flamboyant plans to build an extravagant Chess City in the republic led to protests by some people, but have been praised by others for generating good publicity."

Who gives a crap if he believes in aliens? Is he investing in and promoting chess? Yes.

Imirak is quoting Wikipedia articles. Do people cut your food for you too?

>Who gives a crap if he believes in aliens?<

Not you, and what a relief that is, because once folk like you start giving a crap about anything, we are all in trouble.

What is wrong with quoting wikipedia articles? They have strong standards on citing support for claims. Besides, the article AGREES WITH YOUR ASSERTIONS.

And no, I don't care if he believes in aliens or even Santa Claus if it is not harming others or impairing his ability to do his job.

I notice that you did not refute any of the article's references to all that he has done to promote the game of chess, including investing his personal fortune in it.

No, I guess you are just too offended by his personal delusions that are completely unrelated to chess.

If you can't see how much they damage the (so-called) reputation of organized chess, and prevent the (so-called) rest of the world from taking our game more seriously...you are as much a part of the problem as he is.

You didn't choose to quote that part. Helpful hint...don't quote Wikipedia articles. We all know it's there, and everyone is fully able to read that benighted source of populist information.
