GMs/IMs who started late?

the most incredible case is mihai suba who apparently learned at the age of 19. not only did he became a GM by his late 20's he actually reached top 20 in the world in the 80's, so anyone that claims its not possible simply doesnt know any better.
having said that, the statistical odds are pretty darn bleak. You better give up almost everything in your life and practically breathe chess a top club to make it.

I talked to a couple of players CM+ and read a few articles of GMs who firmly felt they’d have achieved it much sooner if life didn’t get in the way (children, poor finances etc….)
