hate shouldn't be tolerated regardless of any revisionism you write.

i would say that any for profit site would not tolerate any discrimination, whatsoever.

the deletions show that Yes, sometimes chessplayers are Mad.

but, with Good motivation they can chillax- and take a more sedate view of the game (and with life itself)

and sometimes even without drugs.

I'm not sure exactly what the OP wanted this thread to Originally be about. but despite the drama, I believe the average chessplayer to be sane, even clever.

While there are a few mentally-ill chess players, note that chess has some anti-schizophrenic properties: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/23460530_The_game_of_chess_enhances_cognitive_abilities_in_schizophrenia

Even as little as ten hours (not necessarily in a row) will significantly improve cognitive abilities.

I didn't pour over the paper, but I did read the quickie review and it said

that chess helped those That were schizophrenic think.

your mischaracterizing the work to see it reversed (or even effected) the disease.  what it did is make people suffering that disease more cognitive abilities. which I think means stuff like logic and coherent speech.

I'm not mischaracterizing. You just said it yourself (in bold). Schizophrenia is exactly characterized by illogical thinking and incoherent speech, and chess acts positively in organizational thinking. So, even if chess can't cure schizophrenia, it can partially reverse the symptoms, yes. The degree of how much it can reverse them depends on the degree of the illness, but even if it somehow doesn't produce satisfactory results, it can help preventing symptoms from progressing further.

Well up here in Canada we had a famous classical Pianist named Glenn Gould, still considered by many to have been the best at playing the music of JS.Bach but alas poor Glenn was however just a bit " Off ". In my case I'm not famous at all but some people have claimed that I'm also a bit " Off " ( now how the heck did that happen ?  rofl ).

As this sensitive topic has been touched upon, Glenn Gould was actually born Glenn Gold. His family changed their surname to sound less Jewish (even though they were not) amidst rising anti-semitism in Toronto in the 1930's. There were a LOT of racist xenophobes all over the world 80 years ago.

It may cause delusions and hallucinations, but not necessarily. Other symptoms include increasing apathy, similar to depression, when there's a permanent loss of interest even in basic things such as taking a shower or eating, loss of verbal skills (sometimes demonstrated by the elaboration of short and extremely concise answers, without any interest to develop a conversation). Symptoms are actually quite diverse, but they usually involve some sort of cognitive loss, as stated above. It's no surprise Schizophrenia was once called Dementia praecox (lit. "precocious dementia").

It is said that music by Bach or Mozart  can also reverse the symptoms.Because of its logic.

I did not know chess could do that. Thanks for the llink Megabyte.

What I think is the first point you gave is the most relevant @Gerberk that this level of singular focus leaves the person more vunerable to Reality Distortion. This btw is easily "fixable" , same thing as Schizophrenia. The person cant distinguish between something that is Real and something that isn't.

Schizophrenia is not easily fixable. Otherwise, psychiatrists would be happy to advertise the treatment for it. However, chess is an interesting measure to relieve the symptoms and prevent them from progressing.

David Bowie had a brother who was a schizophrenic. The brother killed himself.Bowie sang about it  in the Bewly brothers.

Here Bowie and Catherine Deneuve playing a familiar game.

I can confirm in my own experience slow chess analysis has a very grounding effect. And btw David Bowie was also Psychotic for a period and made brilliant albums about it. Low and Heroes.

"Grounding" would be a great word to describe chess when fighting against schizophrenia. :)

It is the old romantic  idea that genius and madness are somehow related and that there is a thin line between them.
