Madness and chess

"The chess pieces are the block alphabet which shapes thoughts; and these thoughts, although making a visual design on the chess-board, express their beauty abstractly, like a poem... I have come to the personal conclusion that while all artists are not chess players, all chess players are artists. " - Marcel Duchamp

Step 0: Figure out *why* you want to contribute.  The answer you > seek depends a lot on why you're asking the question.... ... snip ...   not sure who it was (maybe even valdis) who once said, "Saying you want to get into playing chess but have no idea where to start so can someone give you suggestions is like saying you want to write a book but don't know what to write about so can someone give you any ideas." From my experience the path to mastery in chess is full of horror, misery, despair and madness.

"Schizophrenia is not easily fixable. Otherwise, psychiatrists would be happy to advertise the treatment for it."

well, I dunno, most have an interest of institutionalizing the diseases, to pay the bill! (cf. lithium story in alcoholic treatments and other disorders; many drs and many patients, for various reasons, have need to institutionalize pbs, not to solve them, pay the bill for the doc, fear for being other that a homer, fear for real life...).

120 " the path to mastery in chess is full of horror, misery, despair and madness.

don't forget it is a game, the moment you find happiness in playing, not winning, the moment you get it. u can be 2800 and look like MVL, u can be 1350 and hilarious all the day. Be clear with your choices in life, it is the way to happiness.

"madness is bad "

1. if it is dangerous, for u or the other, it is obviously bad

2. if it is "sweete madness", cranky weird ppl, funny or not, with not severe disorder, involving NOT the others, the authority, sa called common language "madness" is not good neither bad, it is weirdness, crankyness, originality.

3. concerning artists, some are mad, some are not, all artists are NOT mad, all mads are NOT artists, why ? lotta artists are involved in painting for others, lotta mad are just involced in their jelly belly button making them suffering, nothing else.

If a "mad" in a pathological sense want to be fine, he has to realize he will produce more , and more interesting for him and for others, than if he stays "mad", as many , conscious they are unwell, want to institutionalize that state of consciousness, bad trip for them.

Personal case: i was mad about cig, tobacco, really intoxicated, a fight of tne years and more to quit. Because i was sure to play better piano, write music, if i concentrated with cig. !!!

Now it is one year since i quit, definitely. And i play better, and ideas of sounds are still existing, etc ...

For chess, it is a game first, certainly a therapy too, everything is nowadays therapy. (nb in AQUITANIA, EU, you have chocolate therapy, ie you are placed in a bath of chocolate for relaxation, believe it !). Madness in that case is shared btw therapist and patient, i guess. Anyway it is not dangerous, just expensive. No difference btw adult and child, except price of toys!Laughing. the chessboard is the cheapest ...and priceless.

Real serious mental illness is quite painful for the subject and anyone who cares for him or her.

Such illnesses are almost all difficult to treat.

FRENCHBASHER

yes pain is a serious pb connected with madness, but not in proportion; it means a good guy having nervous breakdown may suffer more than Hitler and Stalin together, sensitiveness is just personal affair, we cannot determine if i suffer more with a stomach ulcer than a serial killer with hundreds of victims.

Very interesting article.  I remember some people at a chess club, long time ago, saying to me that playing blind chess would drive people crazy, they adviced me not to try this.  I don't think this should mean that everyone who plays blind should go crazy, but it would be an outcome for some.  Well, I never tried blind chess and, also, I do not wish to try.

There are many different professions, like chess, art or mathematics, where you have to work with abstract ideas over years. The more work you put into it, the better you'll get (at least 10 000 hours has been set as a rule of thumb). But to push oneself like that can have a servere strain on both body and mind. It's also a lonely work, where a person gets less adjusted to other people.

TODAY

1.   THE PROBLEMS

Big progress on treatments :

0. LABORIT / Val de Grace PARIS, even ROBERT GALLO heard about LABORIT. YESSIR !

1. Lithium was discovered by a nordic psychiatre around 1960, and NO one of confreres wanted to know about it, poor guy.

2. why ? because before lithium , the maniacs people had a life  IN the rooms, which means ...money , 3H to 365 days per year , 366 certain years.

After lithium, they could get out in three days. The market is immense because it has many many precriptions. Alcoholism. Worse than a lotta trouble. Schrecking.

Today almost everybody has a depression ; it is starting at baby's birth, babies blues. Then many 2-5 children may need a pediatre for pedopsychiâtre, 6-15 may need a severe psychoanalysis, 16-75 have to work hard 2/3 it is burn - out which comes (I got one, 2 months stopped, 2005 , and got retired definitely in 2007, the nicest day of my life after birth of my first grand son.

1/3 is without interesting job or unemployment , very increasing main risk, really schrecking: alcoholism associated with disorders.

With alcohol one's can see clowns, bottle of whines, etc ...be anxious, anger ? who knows ?? and try to help lost causes, alerts, false, correcs, false, etc ....

The first to say I was not Peter, i remember, she is great, was not drunken, is a future friend I probably have to admit that.

She had the sense of the limits, key of recovering , borders !

Tomorrow part II . solutions.

ME ? FB, ex-BORDERLINER personality, I could relapse. beware.Laughing.

And FIRST PLAY CHESS, THEN read forums this thread is top ! If someone feels insulted, PROVES IT?!?? etc .Liverpool..sincerely yours FB

It would appear, that the 'road'-to-madness, in Any context.. 1st has to go through the stage of 'Overcompsensating' in some way! o:
